Allergies Springing You Down?
Spring is a time to celebrate and renew! The flowers are blooming and beautiful, but with the flowers and green grass comes pollen; and with Spring-cleaning comes a stirring up of house-dust mites, all of which pose a problem for those with allergic rhinitis (‘hay fever’). It’s more common than you may think, with more than 1 in 7 Australians suffering from allergic rhinitis (that's over 3 million people)1. Do you or someone you know have hay fever? If so, you’ll be all too familiar with the persistent runny or blocked nose, watery eyes and sneezing that comes with your allergy.
Overreacting to allergens?
An allergy is an inappropriate reaction to what should be a harmless substance. For those with allergic rhinitis, whether seasonal or all year round, your immune system is being stimulated by an environmental ‘allergen’, which leads to the prolonged release of histamine and other inflammatory agents. This is what causes those irritating symptoms. Fortunately help is at hand in the form of probiotics. Whilst you may think of probiotics as only being good for digestion, they are also useful to help support a healthy immune system. Lactobacillus paracasei (LP-33™), found in Allergy Control, is one such probiotic that may help reduce allergic sensitivity and which has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of allergy symptoms.
Allergies and the gut, are they related?
Over 70% of the immune tissue in your body is found in your gut2, which is where probiotics such as Lactobacillus paracasei (LP-33™) work. A healthy immune system relies largely upon the health of the gut, therefore you also need to avoid gastrointestinal disruption to your usual ‘good bacteria’ to be healthy. Gut disturbances may be caused by eating a poor diet of refined and processed foods, by drinking too much alcohol, or taking certain medications. As a healthy gut contributes to a healthy immune system – your choices can make a difference.
Probiotics for the relief of hay fever symptoms
You now know that maintaining the health of your gut, and the beneficial bacteria within, plays an important role in immune health. However, particular probiotics also exist that can be identified by their strain and which have been clinically trialed for different health conditions. This is the case for Allergy Control, which contains the same strain and researched dose of Lactobacillus paracasei (LP-33™) that was used to successfully reduce the frequency of allergic rhinitis – reducing both the frequency and severity of symptoms.
Eczema. Is it related?
Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that often appears in early childhood. Similarly to allergic rhinitis, eczema is also related to an inappropriate immune system response. As previously mentioned, different probiotic strains can be used to help different health conditions. Eczema Relief contains Lactobacillus rhamnosus(LGG®) that may help reduce the symptoms of eczema, such as itching and sleeplessness, seen in infants and children*. Furthermore, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG®) may help support normal healthy immune function in both children and adults.
Eating for the relief of allergy symptoms
You may have heard the famous quote “let food be your medicine”, and this is especially true when managing your allergy symptoms. Begin with avoiding foods that are high in sugar (which can reduce immune system function), along with any foods you know you are sensitive to. Instead, include plenty of foods high in the bioflavonoid quercetin and vitamin C (see Table One), which may help to reduce histamine production, therefore assisting you to manage your allergy symptoms.
